1/4/2024 0 Comments Using clamxavI must stress here that, despite its free-ness, ClamXav, in my experience, is also the most accurate of the virus scanners. For now, if you want to do that, you'll have to edit /etc/crontab yourself. I might suggest to the author, for multi-user environments, a way to schedule scans via the global crontab as well. So, for instance, when you set up the scheduler, it's just editing your user crontab. One nice thing about ClamXav is that it uses standard UNIX goodness to accomplish its goals. ClamXav installs that engine, and provides a lovely (well, it's not the most beautiful software, but it's quite functional and easy to understand) GUI frontend that allows you to schdule virus scans, and create watch folders, among other things. ClamXav is basically a GUI wrapper for the open source clamav virus detection software for other UNIX systems, which has been around for some time now. Though the author will take donations, which I highly suggest we all go give him, so that he keeps providing this wonderful software. ClamXav is virus detection software for your Mac, and it's free. Okay, let me back up and explain just what ClamXav is. But ClamXav has made immense strides in the short year since its first appearance, and in it's latest incarnation, the GUI has features that totally and completely rock. Which is funny, because it's whole reason for being was to lend a GUI hand to the command-line, open source clamav engine. This setting should persist through reboots and shutdowns, but may need to be tweaked/rerun after Software Updates. When I originally downloaded and installed ClamXav, I used it entirely from the command-line. The sentry service should now launch (will appear in menu), and should launch upon login by any user. Launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchAgents/-startup Open Terminal and type (or copy/paste):.Authenticate as admin user if prompted.Put the -startup into /Library/LaunchAgents/.Launch ClamAV Sentry from the ClamXav Preferences section, configure preferences for folders to watch etc., then quit Sentry.Run ClamXav at least once in order to install the engine.Install ClamXav app, it must be in Applications folder. ![]() ![]() (right-click or control-click here and "Save Link as.") Applications/ClamXav.app/Contents/Resources/ClamXavSentry.app Instead, a launchd "agent" script is used to open the Sentry app (which is itself located inside the main ClamXav application, only visible via the Terminal or the "Show Package Contents" contextual menu item in the Finder.) The fix outlined here bypasses the default method that ClamXav uses (which involves adding the Sentry app to the user's System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Items list). However, under a managed, non-admin-privileged "student" account, the auto-start-at-login preference refused to save, either because of privilege problems with the student account, a bug with ClamXav, or both. Installation of ClamXav under the administrator account on OS X 10.4 (Intel MacBook) worked, and the admin user was able to configure the Folder Sentry feature to launch automatically at login.
